Microsoft is expanding and investing in Thailand

Microsoft is considering expanding its research and development capabilities in Thailand in various sectors, notably software development, high-performance computing and mobile computing, according to Microsoft (Thailand)'s Managing Director, Patama Chantaruck.

Patama said that in early March the president of Microsoft International and senior vice-president of Microsoft Corporation Jean Philippe Courtois will come to Thailand to announce Microsoft's collaborations and investments here. Courtois was introduced to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, who sat side-by-side with Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft.

Patama added that Microsoft (Thailand) will report directly at an Apac level, not an Asean level, as in the past, and the company sees Thailand as a semi-emerging country.

She said that in past three years, the company has grown from 100 employees to over 300 today, covering sales, marketing, localized language software testing and a new R&D division called Global Healthcare, which came into being when Microsoft acquired Bangkok-based company Global Care Solutions.

In addition, last year Microsoft established the Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) as a creative hub, where technology and support are provided in such a way that users are able to conveniently share knowledge and implement proofs of concept for a wide range of new software. Technologies offered at the MIC already include an RFID reader, a fingerprint reader, Windows Mobile tablet PCs and high-performance computing.

Thailand also receives a share of Microsoft's US$500 million global funding for its Partners in Learning Project, in collaboration with the Education Ministry.

"The global economic crisis will affect all countries, but the new Thai government has already stabilized the situation here and we see a lot of potential, both in people and in the market. That's why we are still considering expansion here," Patama said.

Microsoft (Thailand) Software Design director Worapon Pitayaphongpat added that the company has started by recruiting 10 new people to supplement its new R&D customer service support technology team. This team works with teams in the United States and China, and there are about 70 people globally. The new team here will develop intelligent diagnosis software to automatically analyse software configuration problems for customers, especially SMEs who don't have IT support teams like big enterprises.

He believes that Thailand has many talented people, and a lot of Thai software engineers working in Redmond could relocate here.

"If Microsoft can recruit and develop successfully for research and development here, the company will use Thailand as an R&D hub, especially for software engineering in Asia when we expand to other countries."

Patama explained that Microsoft had recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (Nectec) on R&D, offering the latest Microsoft technologies in order to encourage long-term investment and growth in Thailand.

Pansak Siriratchatapong, director of Nectec, said the MoU with Microsoft was an important milestone to enhance further co-operation and collaboration on an R&D center here in the near future.

"This collaboration will take R&D in Thailand to the next level by working with external parties and implementing Microsoft technologies that can heighten our research standards and drive the country forwards with a range of challenging and innovative IT projects," Pansak said.

He believes that Thailand has promise for R&D in the mobile, education, agriculture and healthcare sectors. He expected that if this collaboration is a success, it will put Thailand in a very good position for software engineering research and development in Asia.

He emphasized that the global economic crisis slowed industry growth, and said that the Thai software industry was expected to grow 4.9 percent, to 65 billion baht (US$1.8 billion), compared to last year's growth rate of 11.2 percent. In these circumstances, he added, it's not so easy to undertake R&D without a partner or collaboration.

The director explained that under the MoU, both sides will send staff to form a joint committee to prioritise projects, then the first stage will cover accessibility technology and the Digitized Thailand project.

Microsoft will exchange information and technology to help disable people with sight, movement, brain or speech disorders to gain access to technology that can help them lead normal and fulfilling lives.

Microsoft will also offer its "Save as Daisy" technology, designed to be compatible with Microsoft Word 2007. Users can easily convert a Word document into the Daisy XML project format under the standard of Digital Accessible Information System (Daisy), which will benefit 300,000 people.

The director continued that Nectec will use e-heritage technology from Microsoft to put information into digital form especially folk wisdom about herbs, local games, traditional dancing, art and yoga in order to encourage people to experience the benefits of digital content and to prepare Thailand for a creative digital economy. Patama added that Microsoft helped Cambodia create 3D virtual maps for Nakorn Wat, Nakorn tom and this cooperation will digitize Thai heritage for a global market.

In the second stage, both sides will develop software to tackle city traffic problem to complement in Nectec's Intelligent Transportation System project, as well as mobile information system that can display agriculture prices in any mobile operating system people in rural areas such as farmers. In addition, they are looking at interoperating software for governmental and private use and to developing new software for testing applications.

Worapon said Microsoft is bring software testing functions to Thailand. The company is starting by testing localized versions of Exchange Server 2007 before launch. He will work with Nectec and Software Park Thailand, as well as academics, to set-up a software testing course to improve software skills.

"Software testing is an important aspect of software engineering, as well as software architect and project management," Worapon emphasized.

Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanich, Minister of Science and Technology, who oversaw the MoU, added the importance of the projects arising from this collaboration should not be underestimated.

In particular, the accessibility technology is a great example of how equal access to technology can bring about not only social benefits, but real long-term economic benefits. Now select the Distortion Tool. Enter a distortion angle of 30° along the vertical axis. This setting means, that vertical lines are just moved vertically, while horizontal lines are tilt by 30°. Without the preceding scaling, the horizontal lines would get longer than the vertical lines at this moment.

I have only just seen the new adverts from Microsot starring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld. The latest ad campaign from Microsoft is an attempt to compete with the infamous Macguy adverts that people know and love.

I myself use a mac computer and I wouldn't use anything else. At work I use a pc and I can instantly tell the difference in usability and work flow and general coolness. There is no comparison. Getting work done on a mac is so much easier. Why? One answer is that it just works and thats that! Nothing will ever let you down on a mac. I have had my macbook for about a year and I have never had to call up "task manager" to close a program down, I have never had to take it into the mac store and tell them something has gone wrong, it has been my perfect tool in designing.

Don't get me wrong I know that windows can be useful, doesnt mean there any good though. However, it completely depends where and when you are using a windows machine. It is a known fact that in a battle between Microsoft and Apple Mac there is only one winner. Currently, it would have to be Microsoft unfortunately. It hurts me to admit this but it is an unfortunate fact. They have the market under their thumb only because of the fact they were first on the "scene" and have been for so many years. PC's are cheap, affordable and easy to chuck into a school, home, office for a couple hundred pounds.

A MAC requires a bit more thought and possible a slight touch of risk to buy it in the first place. People ask themselves about spending all that money, whether or not it is worth it or not. 'Will I be able to use it properly after being so use to a Microsoft personal computer?' This is the one and only the problem with anyone wanting to purchase a MAC. People are intimidated by the change of software. What people don't realise is that a MAC may cost slightly more money but the benefits are un-surmountable compared to a cheap old PC. You buy a PC and expect it to last for a few years if your lucky! I bought my own MAC and expect it to last for ten years, easily! So what is more expensive? Having to continuously buy more and more PC's over the space of ten years or just having one MAC that you know will last you.

It arguable to say that a lot of Microsoft software from the past had originally been based on Macintosh programming but that is still not confirmed. Either way, this battle between a MAC and a Windows machine will always rage on for many years to come! But I would personally never buy a Windows machine ever again in my life.

This is what a miter saw ought to be: accurate, sturdy, powerful, versatile, user-friendly and packed full of cool features.

If we had to choose a favorite aspect, it would have to be the handle. It’s vertical. It’s horizontal. And it’s a couple of other things in between. It locks quickly and easily into any of four positions, so both lefties and righties have complete comfort and control.

This saw is beefy -- it weighs in at 55 pounds and it’s got a nice, wide footprint that promises the ultimate stability, and sliding extensions bring your support area to 37-1/4 inches. If you’re in the market for a stand for this saw as well, we like both the Bosch TracRac as well as the DeWalt DW723.

The dual bevel is a great feature, swinging 47 degrees left and 46 degrees right, with positive bevel stops at 31.6 and 33.9 degrees for flawless crown molding cuts. For miter cuts, the blade swings an impressive 52 degrees left and 60 degrees to the right. There’s even a micro-fine adjustment here, letting you override a detent by as much as 2 degrees. Now that’s precision.

We absolutely love the fence on this saw – Bosch calls it a Speed-track sliding fence – because it’s a full 4 inches tall and has a beautifully readable inch-scale on it. It’s perfect for crown molding, handling pieces up to 6 inches wide when angled against the fence.

We’re suddenly rethinking our earlier statement about our favorite feature on this saw; on second thought, it might well be that all the controls – including the bevel lever – are up front. We’re pretty tired of reaching around a saw body to set a bevel, so this is a most welcome upgrade. Adjustments are so much faster and easier, and all the scales are right up front, too.

Capacities are generous, thanks to the slide, with a max cut of a 2-by-12 at a 45-degree bevel and 3-5/8 by 12 inches when the blade is upright.

And yes, this saw has a laser cutting guide, but unless you really want one, we wouldn’t let that sway a decision on this saw one way or the other. It’s a nice feature if you’re likely to use it, but most of us woodworkers prefer to get a visual on exactly where that blade meets the wood.

A benchtop router offers significant advantages over a handheld machine. It's safer, because you're moving the wood over the bit instead of the other way around. It's also versatile, allowing you to do a number of cuts that aren't possible with a handheld. And because it has a fence, it gives you a degree of control and precision that is simply impossible with freehand routing.

Because you're sliding the wood across the surface of a bench router, it's important that the surface be as frictionless as possible. The RA1181 features a generous 27-inch long by 18-inch wide table that's made out of slick but durable cast aluminum. In addition, he surface near the fence is rough-ground to minimize surface contact, which further reduces friction.

Though the caveat "some assembly required" applies here, the manual is clearly written, and I found the setup process to be straightforward. Once fully assembled, the RA1181 attaches to just about any workbench via the leg assemblies, which have flat "feet" that you can clamp to the table. You can also use the pre-drilled holes to screw it to your work surface if you don't need it to be portable. (Note that most benchtop routers need to be mounted on a smaller table-using a standard worktable may leave it uncomfortably high.)

Once secured to the table, the RA1181 is very stable, and can handle high-horsepower routers and larger work pieces without bucking. The cast aluminum mounting plate accepts a variety of routers-and not just those made by Bosch. The fence is good and rigid, and is adjustable from 0 to 3-3/4-inches wide.

It’s a funny thing about jigsaws; most of us tend to reach for another tool in its stead, having had less-than-great experiences with the little beasts.

But here comes Bosch’s 1590, and it elevates the outcast jigsaw to the most-wanted list.

The first thing we liked about this saw is its heft; it’s beefy, solid and made with that famous Swiss quality. You wrap your hand around the soft, substantial grip, squeeze the ample trigger and the soft-start whirs gently; with hardly any effort from you, the blade slices through whatever’s ahead of it. Perhaps because it’s heavier than most jigsaws, there’s practically zero vibration, giving you a delightfully smooth, no-buzz experience, something pretty much unheard of in your average jigsaw.

Metal Spinning Lathe CNC AutomaticThis is a custom built spinning lathe used to spin form parts from flat metal blanks.
We engineered & built the machine to meet the customer's requirement of 3" to 46" diameter, and a draw depth up to 24".
It can accept a CNC program from disk, or a program can be created and/or modified using an SS Systems Mach3 custom screen via the onboard programming console, or can be programmed manually using the dual MPGs on the pendant, the moves can then be recorded and saved as G-Code moves to create a part rendering program. In fact, the program you see running on the machine was made in less than 15 minutes using the record/playback moves command, and then spin formed the 1,000 parts that are being stacked at the end of the video.
The machine is servo powered and ballscrew actuated, (except the tool changer which is gear driven), has a 0 - 2,750 RPM spindle with 4 programable quick select run speeds, adjustable DC braking via a variable frequency drive, and 2 manual trimmers.

On a Saturday morning, we got on a trip to Pattaya from Bangkok. After a few hours of early morning shopping at the Pratunam wholesale market, we arranged for a taxi to take us to Pattaya. As we were pressed for time, we decided to take the hotel taxi offered at 3,000 baht to take us to Pattaya.

We left Indra Regent Hotel at about 930am, ready for a Pattaya experience. We planned to spend the whole day there. We prepared an itinerary beforehand, and we had a list of the must-visit places and sights. The trip was a bit long. It took about 2 hours, and we arrived in Pattaya Beach just in time for lunch.

There were a lot of restaurants to choose from, and plenty of them were offering European and Thai food at the same time. As we were hungry when we got to Pattaya, our driver took us to the beach side to look for a restaurant. We settled for a simple cafe that served Thai food. The staff were very friendly. They even gave us a free map to guide us in Pattaya, since our driver wasn't too familiar with all of Pattaya's places. We ordered our favorite Thai dishes -- Pad Thai Noodles, Tom Yum soup, Chicken with Cashew and Thai Milk Tea. The food was very delicious! I swear, no one could go wrong with these dishes in Thailand.

After a hearty lunch, we decided to check out the Pattaya beach before heading to Nong Nooch Gardens. We just had to cross the street from the restaurant to head over to the beach. The sight that greeted us was this:

People were sitting next to each other under large beach umbrellas. People were pretty much doing their own thing. Those in groups chatted with each other. There were people who read books as they relaxed by their beach chairs. There were some who were getting massages on the sand near the sidewalk. It was pretty crowded! The shore was filled up with all these people that you can barely walk by the shore to get a clear view of Pattaya Beach. The first row of beach chairs were already very near the water, and it was hard to move without passing by people.

Seeing this scene dropped my expectations of Pattaya beaches. I hope this doesn't hold true for all of Pattaya beach, since I've only explored one part of Pattaya. I was really very surprised that the beach was so crowded that people could hardly enjoy the sights that Pattaya beach offered. This made me appreciate the Philippines' own set of beaches more. Most of our beach destinations may not be as popular as Pattaya Beach Thailand, but we could definitely get a better experience of the sea and sand as our beaches are not too crowded like this.

Answer - easy - The Apex has rooms for 550 Baht in low season. So why waste time looking for a short time hotel for 300 Baht for two hours when you are in the foyer of a hotel that charges 550 Baht for long time.

Make the day of it, relax, long time is better. Call the girlfriend and tell her you had an emergency call from the office in Bangkok and you got to rush to the bus station. Don't be shy, dont be embarrased. Thai girls are born to lie - get your own back and don't feel guilty as you turn the girl around give her a playful slap on the bum and steer her back up in the lift.

Inhabitants of Pattani, published in 1682There are few things that raise Thai hackles more than hearing their beloved country branded by foreigners as a sex paradise.
Yet this reputation does not date back, as one might imagine, to the Vietnam War, when American serviceman flooded into Bangkok and Pattaya for rest and recreation and the sex trade thrived.

In fact, the image can be traced back to the 17th century when junk merchants regularly passed through the kingdom. Christoph Carl Fernberger von Egenberg, for example, described Siamese women as "excessively lewd".

"They are always approaching the men and urging them to go with them into their houses and have sex with them," he wrote in his diary, which was discovered in 1972.

Fernberger arrived in the harbour of Ayutthaya in November 1624 during the reign of King Songtham. He was 26 at the time. His accounts of his travels in the region, which include Siam and Pattani, are almost unknown to foreign scholars but many Austrian historians believe Fernberger was the first of their countrymen to set foot in the two Southeast Asian harbour cities.

The first Austrian in Ayutthaya was impressed by the wealth of the kingdom and the wise rule of the Siamese king as well as his "open door policy" and strict law enforcement, says associate professor Helmut Lukas who recently talked about Fernberger's diary at a Siam Society lecture organised in cooperation with Chulalongkorn University's Centre for European Studies.

Lukas, however, doesn't agree with Fernberger's perspective of the women in Ayutthaya.
"Like any big port, Ayutthaya had a well-established prostitution ring catering to foreign seamen. But it would be wrong to assume that their behaviour was indicative of Thai women of that era," says Lukas, an academic with the Social Anthropology Research Unit, Centre for Studies in Asian Cultures, Austrian Academy of Science.

As an independent observer with no obligations to a trading company, Fernberger's diary may offer an alternative perspective to the often one-sided Dutch sources, the Austrian anthropologist adds.

"But his pages on the women in Ayutthaya were based on his impressions of a very limited area, which he wrongly extrapolated to the entire country," Lukas points out.

Unfortunately, many Dutch merchants held similar views of the woman they took as their "wives" in Ayutthaya, according to professor Barbara Watsan Andaya, author of the paper "From Temporary Wife to Prostitute: Sexuality and Economic Change in Early Modern Southeast Asia" published in the Journal of Women's History in 1998.

"VOC employees in Ayutthaya even referred to their 'wives' as whores, sluts and trollops and the like," writes the professor of History and Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii.
While researching her paper, Andaya discovered that other than several works covering prostitution, no historical investigation has been carried out into the changing attitudes toward sexuality in Southeast Asia, despite the fact that the "high status" of women is often cited as characteristic of the region.

Siamese women in the 17th century are also mentioned in the diary of French ambassador Simon de La Loub่re, who arrived in Ayutthaya some 30 years after Fernberger.

The ambassador writes in his memoirs about a brothel in the capital of Ayutthaya, which was home to some 600 women from different levels of society, including the daughters and wives of the court's noblemen.

La Loub่re, who was in Siam during the reign of King Narai, also relates how prostitution tax, collected from those with permission to run brothels, was first imposed in this reign and that the largest brothel was run by one of the king's noblemen.

Prostitution in the port city of Pattani is also mentioned in the journals of several 17th-century foreign traders. The Dutch merchant Van Neck, who arrived in Pattani in the early 1600s, describes the women at the harbour and their services.

"When foreigners come from other lands to do their business…men come and ask them whether they desire a woman. The young women and girls also come and present themselves, from whom they may choose the one most agreeable to them, provided they agree what he shall pay for certain months. Once they agree about the money (which does not amount to much for so great a convenience), she comes to his house, and serves him by day as his maidservant and by night as his wedded wife."

For his part, the foreign trader had to agree not to consort with other women while the temporary wife was similarly forbidden to converse with other men. The "marriage" was deemed to last for as long as the man kept up his residence, "in good peace and unity".
Fernberger, who arrived in Pattani in December 1624, wasn't interested in hooking up with a woman at the harbour. His attention was on the female ruler with whom he had been granted an audience.

Pattani was under the rule of Raja Ungu, the third of four successive queens to take the throne. Fernberger describes her as an absolutist ruler who did not listen to any council.
In his diary he describes the royal entourage of 200 women. As a sign of royal power, she kept about 50 elephants and possessed some 50 men who she used for her sexual pleasure.
Lukas says the women of Pattani, and especially the queen, enjoyed many liberties.
"This proves that being a Muslim doesn't mean being "macho" or a misogynist.

The gender equality in the old Pattani kingdom sets an example for modern times," he says.
But some of Fernberger's accounts about the queen are much less credible.

Lukas smiles as he recounts Fernberger's reason for leaving Pattani.

He writes that after being granted an audience with Raja Ungu, she provided him with a house and 10 slaves. He later helped her fight the Siam invasion in January 1625 in which Pattani won the battle. The young Austrian describes how the queen expressed her gratitude by sending him a present and passing on a message that she would visit him at night.

"Fernberger says a Malay colonel gave him to understand that the queen intended to make love with him. As he'd heard that men who had failed to meet her high expectations were ordered to be killed, Fernberger clandestinely sneaked down to the shore, boarded a small sailboat and went back to Ayutthaya.

His stay in Pattani lasted 71 days," says the professor, laughing.

The Past

Pattaya's name was originated from the march of Phraya Tak (later known as King Taksin the Great) and his followers from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi just before the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom to the Burmese invaders in 1767.

When Phraya Tak's army arrived in the vicinity of what is Pattaya today, he encountered the troops of Nai Klom who tried to intercept him. When the two leaders met face to face, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak's dignified manner and his army's strict discipline, thereby surrendering without a fight. The place where the two armies confronted each other was later called Thap Phraya, which means the Army of the Phraya. This was later changed to Phatthaya, which happens to mean the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season. Today the spelling of the name has been simplified to Pattaya.

For centuries, Pattaya was a small fishing village almost cut off from the outside world. But a big change occurred on 29 April 1961 when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who would join the Vietnam War arrived in Pattaya for relaxation. Soon, sleepy Pattaya became Thailand's premier and most successful beach resort, which annually attracts hundreds of thousands of pleasure-seeking visitors. A full range of accommodations from super deluxe hotels to bungalows and mini-pocket guesthouses replaced fishermens huts along the beach. Fishing vessels were adapted to become tourist boats and swimmers and sunbathers from various parts of the world frequented the quiet powdery golden beaches. Places of nighttime entertainment have also sprung up and are popular among international tourists.

The Present

Pattaya currently integrates the delights of a 1st class beach resort, city-like dining, shopping and night entertainment facilities with more than 300 assorted hotels, thousands of shops, restaurants and bars. In addition, there are an array of sports and recreational activities including beaches, golf courses, tennis courts, go-kart, gyms for working out, weight lifting and Thai-boxing gear. Pattaya offers a broad range of things to do. During the day, one may enjoy riding elephants or driving humble automatic mini-bikes, monstrous motorcycles, or even monster multicolored convertible Jeeps. Others go for shooting firearms, scuba diving and surfing, deep-sea fishing, speed boats, scooters, water-skiing, parasailing, or aerial sports such as gliding ultra-lights and flying motor-propelled gliders. On the other hand, at night, there are restaurants, bars, theaters, cabaret shows, night clubs, bowling halls, billiard & snooker clubs, discos, sauna & massage parlors, not to cite its absolutely incredible shopping which is available non-stop both day-and-night.

Pattaya Facts

This exotic beach resort welcomes approximately 5 million visitors a year. The friendly and hospitable Thai nature boosts its promotion, frequently bringing back the repeat visitors and constantly increasing the number of newcomers.

Pattaya city is located on the eastern coast of the country at latitude 13 N and longitude 101 E in the area of Chon Buri province. It is 147 kilometers from Bangkok and lies parallel to Sukhumvit Road on its east and the coastline on its west. Pattaya occupies an area of 208.1 sq. km. that is divided into 53.44 sq. kilometers of land and 154.66 sq. kilometers of islands and sea. Its coastline is 15 kilometers long.

Pattaya has a plain on the coast with some high mountains to the south. The area on the east slopes down towards the sea on the west.

Administration

Pattaya City has been administered under a special autonomous system since 1978. It has a status comparable to that of a municipality and is administered separately by the mayor of Pattaya City, who is responsible for making policies, organizing public services, and supervising all employees of Pattaya City Administration.

Pattaya has well over 1000 (some say 1500 !) beer bars . The Thai beer bar is a small open air bar usually staffed by around 5 or 6 hostesses who will do everything they can to attract the potential customer to their establishment.

Commonly, the bars are found tightly packed together each with their own music at full volume. This creates a rowdy party atmosphere that many find entertaining but others find to be auditory torture. For these individuals (and I am one) there are, thankfully, many smaller bar areas throughout the city where conversation with friends or the welcoming staff can be had in relative peace and with so many establishments available there is sure to be somewhere to suit everyone.

Though they can be found scattered just about everywhere throughout Pattaya and Jomtien, the main areas are between Walking Street all the way down Pattaya Beach and Second Road (including the connecting streets called Sois) ending in a very large cluster near Soi No 2. A little bit further on, and sometimes overlooked, is another huge group in Naklua.

Beer bars are usually small businesses of a type that are not likely to gain a lot of business from advertising on the web. For that reason most of the websites are fairly simple affairs often made by the staff themselves. However, some of these are worthy efforts that at least give those new to Thailand or Pattaya some idea of what to expect.

The company was founded in 1995 and since then has been located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. CNC Industries supplies fabricated and/or assembled parts to customers in the aerospace, defense, and medical fields.

More information has surfaced on the story we first discussed yesterday; that two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart is working on a deal to jump from Joe Gibbs Racing to Haas CNC Racing next season. Both ESPN.com and Sports Illustrated’s website -- SI.com – say Stewart will be given partial ownership in Haas CNC Racing, in exchange for his agreement to drive for the team, beginning in 2008.

Stewart’s contract with JGR runs through the 2009 campaign, making a move before then extremely complicated, if not impossible. Stewart's PR spokesman, Mike Arning, admitted as much yesterday, saying, “He's there this year, and he's there next year. I know for a fact that JGR is interested in retaining Tony for 2010 and beyond. They'd like him to retire at Joe Gibbs Racing. As Tony's said many times, 'Nothing's broke. Why change it?'”

The reports persist, however, saying that Stewart has begun talks with JGR officials to obtain a release from the final year of his contract. Team President J.D. Gibbs made it clear that he expects Stewart to honor his contract to the letter, saying, “The reality is, he's racing here through 2009. There's no ifs, ands or buts about that one. Our stance is he's racing for us through 2009."

The reported deal has Stewart receiving as much as a 50% ownership stake in Haas-CNC Racing, while also being paid to drive one of their two Chevrolets. Haas-CNC General Manager Joe Custer admitted today that he has spoken with several parties about the future of the team, including Stewart's representatives. That admission contradicts the statements of Haas-CNC spokesman Ron Mench, who said yesterday that there has been no communication with Stewart. Custer said that no deal has been reached, but that he would be “interested in discussing a partnership with a driver of (Stewart’s) caliber."

If the move happens, Stewart would return to the Chevrolet camp after a year with Toyota. Many observers point to Stewart’s ongoing relationship with Chevrolet -– which supplies engines to his open wheel midget and sprint car teams -– as a major factor in his decision to bolt JGR. However, Stewart drove JGR Chevrolets for many years, while receiving Mopar engines and financial backing for his short track programs.

Effective immediately, Jeremy Mayfield will replace Jeff Green at Haas CNC in the #66 Best Buy/Haas Automation Chevrolet. Jeff Green had been driving the car since the beginning of the 2006 season, but has only recorded five top ten finishes in the time-span.

Mayfield has spent a majority of his first season with Bill Davis Racing on the couch as a spectator as he has only qualified for 13 of the 32 races. Ever since his acrimonious split with Ray Evernham and Evernham Motorsports, now Gillett Evernham Motorsports, Mayfield's career has hit a downward spiral. This opportunity with Haas CNC may not lead him to a NASCAR Sprint Cup championship, but he will have the luxury of utilizing Hendrick Motorsports engine packages.

All three of Jeff Green's top ten finishes have occurred on tracks in which the Car of Tomorrow has been used, so considering that the Car of Tomorrow will be fully implemented in 2008, Mayfield could reel of a few good finishes. Scott Riggs will likely take over the #70 ride that Johnny Sauter currently drives.

"He (Jeremy Mayfield) has been in the Chase two of the last four years and that was a big factor in our decision. We very excited," said Joe Custer, the general manager for Haas CNC.

Local manufacturing firm Crestwood Cabinets, Inc., has just acquired a Morbidelli Universal 3615 Computer Numerical Control machine.

CNC machines are used in manufacturing to produce components with exacting tolerances and to increase production capacity while reducing waste.

Crestwood owner Deane Hinrichs explained, “The CNC machine gives us the ability to do even more detailed and intricate custom work as well as high-volume commercial cabinetry.

“It also helps us be more environment-friendly by reducing the amount of waste generated from cabinet production.”

The CNC machine was delivered to Crestwood’s factory, located on 760th St. in Hager City, last month and became fully operational Nov. 7. Factory representatives spent five days earlier this month performing setup, programming and training Crestwood personnel.

Crestwood Cabinets has been locally owned for over 30 years. Deane Hinrichs is a second-generation owner and a local resident. Crestwood currently employs nine local residents.

Finally, you will have to decide on the type of tolerance you want. This will speak to the accuracy and the precision of the machine. Once you understand what you want, it’s time to look at the steps to building it which will be talked about in a different article.

Tube Bender Helps BAE Systems Build Sub

A Unison tube bending machine is helping BAE Systems to fabricate complex part shapes required to build the UK’s Astute Class nuclear-powered submarines. The all-electric tube bender features both right- and left-handed bending capability. This allows long and complicated tubular part shapes to be produced very rapidly and in a single stage. For BAE Systems this is a critical advantage, as the boat-building process must run to plan, and many parts are produced to demand to satisfy the production schedule.

In some cases, such as when fabricating tubular shapes of several metres in length, the machine also allows BAE Systems to make parts from a single length of tubing, avoiding any need to join tube sections. In addition to production speed advantages, this capability also eliminates time-consuming and expensive X-ray and crack-detection testing stages that would otherwise be required to verify the integrity of welded joints for this high-reliability equipment.

In order to fit in all of the submarine’s equipment, and maximise the free space available, small-bore piping and tubing services such as hydraulic lines are often shaped to fit into the free spaces adjacent to panels and bulkheads. Consequently, tubular parts are often fabricated in batch sizes of just one. The Unison tube bender is making it quicker to produce components, as programs are simply loaded from the design database, and bends are then made precisely by servomotor movement axes with closed-loop control mechanisms.

No manual intervention or adjustments of any kind are required. If the tooling is already on the machine, the setup operation is achieved in around 15 minutes. This is at least twice as fast as the setup process for the company’s hydraulic bending machines. Power consumption reduction is another advantage of the Unison bender. As there are no hydraulic pumps continuously running, significant electrical current is only drawn when the machine is making a bend, so energy consumption is reduced substantially.

Another useful aspect of the machine is its incorporation of software-based facilities that can be used for fault diagnosis. These include a camera that can be used to capture images or video of any operational problems.

In combination with a software ‘black box’ which automatically stores the last 500 instructions entered by the operator, along with details of machinery positions from the servo motor sensors, Unison have detailed information to provide remote maintenance advice. To save space, the new tube bender incorporates on-machine guard panels. This feature will also simplify moving the machine if required, for any reorganisation of the shipyard for subsequent construction projects.

It is really quite an ingenious concept (after all, we all want more money and more time), and doesn’t seem to be a new one either. A certain Greek—a mathematician by profession and interest—whose name was Hero created a vending machine of sorts, which would vend water within Egyptian temples. Many centuries later, vending machines were offered commercially in London. In the 1880s vending sales in London included vending machines that would dispense post cards or books.Vending Machines Take on a Sweeter Flavor in the United States In 1888 vending machines and vending services and sales were offered commercially in the United States as well. The vending machines in the United States were first introduced by the Thomas Adams Gum Company, whose owners were of course interested in taking advantage of vending machines for the sake of selling their gum. On Tuesday July 1st the “Wheel 2 Wheel Show” marked its 50th radio broadcast by attending Camp Barnes in South Bethany. The show was done to raise awareness for the camp and to promote the upcoming Camp Barnes Benefit Stock Car Race that will be held at the Delaware International Speedway on Wednesday July 9th. Camp Barnes has been in operation for 61 years and is open to children between the ages of 10-13 at no cost to the camper or family. The camp accommodates 60 campers per week for 6 weeks and is operated by the Delaware State Police.Several local racers showed up to the show and allowed the campers to get an up close look of their race cars and also gave out autograph cards to the excited group. Local band “Backseat Rhythm” was also on hand to entertain the crowd. The Wheel 2 Wheel Show is hosted by Wade Perdue along with his brother Brandon, Kelly Putz and meteorologist Harlan Williams. Archimedes, a classical mathematician who died 2,200 years ago, is about to become part of the PLM (product lifecycle management) lexicon.Soon after the ink dried on its acquisition of UGS, Siemens' Automation & Drives (A&D) division began working on a project dubbed Archimedes. Discussing it in the company's internal publication titled Pictures of the Future, publisher Arthur F. Pease wrote, "Siemens' recent acquisition of UGS has given its [A&D] Group ... the tools to merge the real and virtual worlds of production" ("Factories of the Future — UGS and Siemens," Fall 2007). For more on the Archimedes Project, read "Event Report: [2007] UGS Media/Analyst Conference."At Siemens' 2008 media and analyst briefing, which took place in Boston, Massachusetts, in May, Michael Weyrich, leader of new-generation business at Siemens A&D, introduced tangible evidence of Archimedes in operation. By marrying UGS's NX to Siemens' motion-control capabilities, Siemens has developed the Virtual Machine, which connects CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) to CNC (computer numerical control).CNC Behavioral ScienceGenerally, a CAM program simulates the machining operations by animating the machine's movements based on kinematics, the mechanical motions predicted based on physics. However, in the physical world, the CNC operator uses a controller attached to the machine to perform the required tasks."In the Virtual Machine, NX takes into account the unique machine-tool characteristics of the real machine's controller," Weyrich said, "so information like how a machine is configured on a certain shop floor, for example, will be part of the simulation."With Siemens' Virtual Machine, the simulation process is driven not only by kinematics but also by the motion algorithms used by an actual 840D controller. Therefore, it is expected to faithfully depict the cutting conditions, axis movements, collisions, work piece geometry, and motion behaviors of the machine tools equipped with a Siemens 840D control.The virtual machine can physically be found at INDEX, a CNC machine supplier headquartered in Esslingen, Germany. It is now part of what the company delivers to its customers along with the physical hardware.The Virtual Machine, a use-case scenario derived from Siemens' Archimedes Project, produces accurate simulation of machining operations by incorporating the controller's algorithm.E4DFWolfgang Schloegl, Siemens' digital factory team leader, followed Weyrich's virtual machine presentation with another that focused on the virtual factory, or E4DF (engineering for digital factory). The result is that existing software tools can easily be used again and combined with SIMATIC Automation Designer."With SIMATIC, CAD diagrams form the basis for plant layout. Once read into SIMATIC, they become the touchstones for configuring the production process. "The product has been field-tested for 1.5 years," said Schloegl. "It's now ready in a way that we can sell it."By the end of this month, SIMATIC 3.0 should be available, along with E-CAD Extension Packages for automatically generating and integrating circuitry design. Schloegl revealed that SIMATIC will begin using JT, a lightweight file format developed by UGS, for visualization of factory components in 2009.Live Rules Overrule Feature HistorySynchronous Technology, Siemens' answer for combining freeform and parametric modeling, had been in incubation in a development lab at UGS before the acquisition. In April, Dassault previewed CATIA Live Shape, a freeform-modeling module for CATIA users.Evan Yares, a CAD industry veteran in attendance at the Siemens event, said that what CAD vendors are pitching as freeform modeling may be described more accurately as "feature-imprint modeling."Unlike the freeform-modeling methods found in software programs widely used by animation artists and game developers (such as Autodesk 3d Studio Max or Maya), the method now making its way into CAD packages relies on the recognizable topology of mechanical features (holes, tubes, and shafts) and makes every effort to retain the surface and geometric relationships. Therefore, Yares argued, the deformation is based on the existing imprint of a feature.Synchronous Technology relies on Live Rules, a set of algorithms for detecting and recognizing standard mechanical features, to let the software intelligently reshape the affected geometry in response to a user's pushes, pulls, and dimension-driven changes. Live Rules can be disabled when a user wants to make an unorthodox change that might break the generally accepted associativities and constraints in a feature. Conversely, users also have the option to place locked constraints (or parameters) on a model.In the demonstration, Dan Staples, director of Solid Edge product development, demonstrated how one can use Synchronous Technology to edit a Solid Edge assembly containing a SolidWorks part and an Inventor part. The new releases of NX and Solid Edge (dubbed Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology, or SEST for short) both feature Synchronous Technology.Siemens promotes upcoming releases of NX and Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology as CAD tools with the potential to offer dramatically higher productivity in multi-CAD environments.Other HighlightsNX 6 features Product Template Studio, a way to publish a simplified parametric model from a complex part as input. The tool is designed to let users automatically generate a brand new part based on an existing one through guided input fields, bypassing the need to directly interact with the geometry.With NX 6, using the mix-mesh approach, a user can prepare a mesh model for analysis with different mesh densities for different regions. The tool is particularly useful when dealing with products with a mix of simple and complex curvatures or a combination of thick and thin surfaces.Throughout the last several years, digital prototyping has become the new mantra for CAD and PLM vendors. Probably the plan was to replace it quickly with a new one. But it didn't come. After a few months still nothing.
Some said they had some budget problems, others blamed it on the new elections.

Anyway, they started working again, installed something half completed, and... stop working again.

They complained that city officials illegally issued a construction permit for the company to build the high rise in an area where the height limit was 14 meters.The plaintiffs based their case on the 1978 ministerial regulation that forbids buildings from exceeding 14 meters in height if situated 200 meters or less from the sea. They also claimed the new building would obstruct their sea view and redirect the wind flow, negatively affecting sanitary and living conditions. The current building work, it’s claimed, has also created dust and cracks to the Jomtien Condotel. The administrative court granted an injunction to halt construction, saying that the plaintiffs and city hall disagreed on the starting point from which to measure the building’s height. The disagreement is essentially about whether the mean water level or the low tide-mark is used as the base measurement point for the building site. Richard Haines, one of the plaintiffs, said the court’s decision could set a standard for developers in Thailand as a whole. He explained that the owner of Jomtien Complex Condotel, which is about 220 meters from the sea, had planned to build a low rise hotel on the disputed plot but had later sold the land, then finally developed by View Talay. The residents of Jomtien Complex Condotel are believed to be the first in the area to challenge the awarding of a major building permit by city hall authorities. Although the final outcome won’t be known for months, even years if there is an appeal, they are to be congratulated on their courage in standing up for what they clearly see are their rights. The cynics, wrongly, had earlier said they didn’t have a chance.

This is the CNC Video series on how to take an image to a CNC File. This process is one that many CNC Users want to know, but there is not much info on. Here is your chance to get the inside scoop.
SheetCAM is a great CAM Software program. We will use SheetCAM to define our tools and our CNC Process. First we pick the tool that we will use. Next we go through the different Machining Parameters and define them. Then we look at the start and stop points to see if they are in good location. Finally we post-process a g-code file that has all the information we need to machine or cut out the part.

Post-Processors can easily be changed in SheetCAM. I have a unique one for my machine because I built my own machine. There are standard ones and customs one. Each of them produce a G-Code file that your CNC Control Software can execute.
